3.8. Instrumentation for Training
(Commission II/IV Newsletter; editor: Prof Dr Ian Dowman,
UK)
This useful, successful series was continued in September 1988
and October 1989 with Newsletters No. 3 and 6, respectively.
According to them, the following instruments, computers and
software systems are used for training in photogrammetry
and remote sensing:
- Simple stereoplotters such as the CP 1
- Photogrammetric stereoplotters no longer used for map
production, e.g. A7, B8, PG2 and others
- Simple analytical compilation systems such as SAPS or
analytical plotters such as Planicomp
- Software packages for computerized image processing
Conclusions
Space technology, microelectronics, computers and information
handling are progressing rapidly. These disciplines have a
great and direct influence on photogrammetry and remote
sensing.
Research institutes and the industry are making use of the
chances resulting therefrom: they offer ever new solutions
year after year for tasks in all areas of photogrammetry and
remote sensing, so that state-of-the-art, automated instrumenta
tion is on the market worldwide. On the other hand, thousands of
companies and offices engaged in map-making are still equipped
with conventional, i.e. optical-mechanical equipment, which is
known to have a service life of 20 to 30 years.
Introduction into practice of the advanced systems, with
increasing shares of computers and software, will certainly
be a step-by-step process, but as they substitute the
conventional equipment, another increase in efficiency is
certain to come.
The Working Groups of Commission II of the ISPRS concentrate
their efforts on the further improvement of systems for data
