INTERNET-ATLAS OF NATURAL AND AGRONOMIC RESOURCES IN NIGER AND 
BENIN - A TOOL FOR PRESENTATION AND EXCHANGE OF SPATIAL DATA-

Abstract 
The "Atlas of Natural and Agronomic Resources" represents a new approach in the representation 
of scientific results. It was developed within the Special Research Programme 308 "Adapted 
Farming in West Africa" as a tool to collect and present spatial data. Today, science is developing 
rather fast and research results have to be updated. Therefore, the main objective was to create an 
atlas which can account for new developments and is not static. At the same time it should be open 
to research results of partner organizations and other researchers who are working on similar 
subjects and look for a forum to present their results. 
These objectives can best be met by using the internet as a publishing medium. The atlas is 
designed as a web page of the University of Hohenheim. It consists of basically two units: the atlas 
itself with maps, aerial photographs and satellite images related to the natural and socio-economic 
environment and a database. Maps are shown together with comments and interpretations. The 
database contains the necessary data to reproduce the published results and the methods which have 
been applied to create the maps. This allows for a further development of the maps (up - and 
downscaling) when new research results become available. 
In order to make this information also available to other interest groups which do not have access to 
the internet, publishing is also planned via CD and print media.

Résumé 
Le "Atlas des Ressources Naturelles et Socio-Économiques" présent une approche nouvelle pour la 
présentation des résultats scientifiques. Le développement de l'atlas prend place dans le cadre de 
Programme Scientifique Spéciale 308 "Agronomie adapté en Afrique de l'Ouest" comme un outil 
pour la collection et présentation des donnes spatiales. Aujourd'hui la science se développe 
rapidement et les résultats scientifiques ont besoin de être mis a jour. L'objective de cet atlas est de 
créer un médium qui est prêt de répondre à un développement continu et qui n'est pas statique. En 
même temps il serait ouvert aux résultats des partenaires scientifiques qui travaillent sur le même 
sujet. Ces objectives peuvent être réaliser en utilisant l'Internet pour la publication. 
L'atlas est désigné comme page dans l'Internet lié à la présentation de l'Université Hohenheim. Il a 
deux élément principaux: les cartes, photos aériennes et images satellite qui sont commenté et la 
base de donnes. La base de donnes contiens les donnes nécessaires pour la reproduction des 
résultats publiés et les méthodes qui sont utilisé pour la création des cartes. Avec cette structure il 
est possible de développer des cartes nouvelles dans l'instant autres résultats sont obtenu. 
La publication dans l'Internet, sur CD et même imprimé permet 1 accès à tous les hommes 
intéressés.
