Traditional and Modern Methods of Surveying Architectural Heritage: ... the Fortified Island of Malta
535
3. CONCLUSION
The surveying of the extensive network of Maltese fortifications, presented in the framework of a wider, multidisciplinary restoration
project, presents an interesting challenge. In the paper some examples of the activities carried out are presented; their aim is to
provide a rigorous knowledge, from the geometrical point of view, of the single architectural objects together with the whole fortified
system. The accuracy of the surveys is consistent with the different kinds of analysis required before the restoration activities. In
particular, hybrid analytical-digital approaches are presented; together with a reduction in restitution work for elements of high
complexity, they permit to obtain in a short time metrical products directly usable; a cautious adoption of digital rectification
techniques for portions of the walls could, for instance, represent a useful solution for the purposes of the project.
