1. Provision of industry earth
observing data and derived
information, ground truth data
bases, global geophysical,
geochemical, geological,
oceanographic, and meteorological
data and information, and other
supporting environmental ground
truth data.
2. Provision of earth observation,
data processing,and GIS expertise
in addition to access to large
interdisciplinary industry
scientific research expertise.
3. Provision of and shared access
to extensive industry research
facilities and field measurement
capabilities.
4. Financial support both in
coordinating present and planned
research activities as well as
industry funded research to be
linked with planned and developing
CES GCRP research.
5. Support before Congress for
federal funding for the GCRP and
for NASA's EOS programs, in
particular where such programs can
be mutually beneficial to
government, industry and academia
through linked cooperative R&D on
earth observations, global change
studies, and environmental
management.
Finally, regarding the benefits
of industry participation, the
following comments are quoted from
a 1989 Geosat Committee position
letter by Dr, Kenneth W. Ciriacks,
Vice President, AMOCO Production
Company, a long term Director of
the Geosat Committee, and an
original author of the benefits
listed above.
"We <the Geosat Committee
corporate members> have
traditionally focused on the
development of satellite imagery
techniques to enhance our search
for energy and mineral resources.
We must now realize that we are
"players" in an energy industry
that produces, refines, transports,
and ultimately provides for the
utilization of hydrocarbons as the
major energy source and a major
contribution of C02, methane and
other gases to this planet's
atmosphere. It is directly in our
shareholders' best interests that
we contribute toward and
participate in this kind of global
study which will provide a better
definition of our activities and
help to create a better informed
public to support the critical
energy decisions our government
needs make."
"We need the collective money,
expertise, people, and time of
government, universities and
industry with a strong and common
commitment to provide timely and
cost-effective research. We then
need to report and communicate
results in a cooperative format to
provide our public with the best
predictive models of what is
happening to our environment and
what the solutions and impacts of
those actions will be."
In another industry conclusion:
"In summing up its own commitment
for 'environmental principles',
Reynolds Metals Co. could be
speaking for many corporations: 'We
believe that environmental
protection and sound business
management are mutually achievable
objectives.'" (Business Week,
1990).
