20 INAUGURAL PLENARY SESSION
who are always willing to support our ITC. What is the 1TC? It is nothing less than a
scientific Institute — a Training Centre as it is called — where we bring together people
from all over the world to learn photogrammetry, to develop and to have the benefit of
development which takes place within our staff. It is not only concerned with photo
grammetry and map-making but it includes also the interpretation side.
However, I will now finish this short speech with another remark. I should like to
quote a famous man, the Prime Minister of India, Mr Nehru, who visited our Institute
a few years ago. He made a short speech to our students in which he expressed one of
the very essential elements of it. Some of you know that I am not only interested in
photogrammetry but that I believe that, however important photogrammetry may be,
there are other features in human life which are still more important and which deter
mine the future of mankind even more than photogrammetry. It is the combination of
those elements — the technique and the general human behaviour and policy — which
we feel in this Institute. This was also felt by Nehru who said:
“It is important, Gentlemen, that you learn here photogrammetry and aerial
survey in this Institute, but, perhaps, more important, is that you learn here
during your stay, during this one year, how to live together, and that you find
out that the difference between human beings is much smaller than some people
try to make us believe.”
The President then closed the Inaugural Session.
