ASSESSMENT OF VOLUME CHARACTERISTICS
OF TROPICAL RAIN FORESTS ON LARGE
SCALE AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS
P.J.D. Versteegh*)
ABSTRACT
The usefulness of large scale aerial photography of a tract of tropical
rain forest in Surinam was investigated, by the ITC Forestry Department.
Panchromatic BW, colour, and infrared colour photos of 70 mm size and
1 : 5,000 scale were available for initial tests on the possibilities
of special recognition, crown counts, and stratified crown counts. The
use of colour filmtypes offered little better possibilities than pan
chromatic BW.
More extensive investigations were carried out after a panchromatic BW,
narrow angle photo coverage of 1 : 5,000 scale and 23 cm size was acquired.
The results of the tests indicate that crown counts and stratified crown
counts offer possibilities for assessment of the timber potential of the
forest.
