Members of out staff actively participate in the acitivies of
many scientific organizations and bodies: Committee of Space
Research, Committee of Geodesy of the Polish Academy of Scien
ces, Polish Society of Photogrammetry, Polish Geographical
Society, etc* The Institute of Geodesy and Cartography has a *
degree granting priviledge in all fields of its activity , in
cluding remote sensing.
The results of scientific investigations are published in nume
rous scientific Journals. One of them: "Prace Instytutu Geo-
dezji i Kartografii" /Proceedings of the Institute of Geodesy
and Cartography /is available in a number of scientific centres
abroad. Volume 2/59/> published in 1978, is devoted exclusi
vely to remote sensing; it contains papers and presentations
submitted for the 2nd Remote Sensing Symposium, which took pla
ce in Warsaw, in November'1977. /Pirst Symposium was organized
in October 1976/.
Our Remote Sensing Centre actively cooperates with various pro
duction enterprises; mainly with geodetic and cartographic
enterprises of GEOKART /Union of Polish Geodetic and Cartogra
phic enterprises/. The State Geodetic and Cartographic Enter
prise in Warsaw provides us with various kinds of aerial photo
graphy.
Proper utilization of information acquired by different methods
and of various degree of generalization is very important for
a country of the size of Poland. Information collected at the
ground level, low and high altitude aerial photography and
satellite imagery should be collected and interpreted. Since
ground truth is still collected, to a large estent, by tradi
tional methods, close cooperation of all institutions engaged
in the process of data acquisition, processing and interpreta
tion at all three levels is very important. Geodetic and carto
graphic enterprises responsible for the collection, processing
and dissemination of data on land utilization /in a broad sense
of this word/ play a specific role in our model of remote sen
sing. The final product of these enterprises is a topographic
or thematic map.
Polish geodetic and cartographic service is planning to intro
duce comprehensive system of thematic maps for the national
economy. The works are now focused at the elaboration of general
outline of the system and its organizational set-up. Remote sen
sing techniques "are expected to play an ever increasing role in
thematic cartography.
TRENDS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OP APPLICATIONS
OP REMOTE SENSING IN POLAND
Past and present works on remote sensing techniques and their
practical applications have mainly been carried out in connection
with mineral prospecting, resource management, regional planning,
agri cui tiare, forestry and environmental protection.
Our works in the field of mineral prospecting and utilization of
natural resources were mainly of technological character. Our
