THE ESTIMATION OF METRIC ELEMENTS
OF A LINE ON AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS
by M. B. Markovic, M. D. Dimitrijevic, R. S. Petrovig

Abstract Quantitative statistical analysis of a drainage network, as a tool for geological
interpretation of photographs, may be accomplished on photogeological maps or on photo
graphs themselves. The use of photo-geological maps introduces, especially in mountainous
regions, errors which are hard to predict, and which are caused by the radial triangulation
sketchmaster process.
In the case of measurement of length and orientation of the “unit stream sections” of the
drainage network directly from a photograph, serious errors due to topographic displacement
may occur. The authors analyse these errors as functions of the focal length, radial distance
from the principal point, and of the angle and direction of pitch of the line, representing a
unit stream section. These functional relations are presented in formulae and graphs, and a
method of approximate corrections is proposed. Quantitative statistical analyses of a drainage
network on photographs is thus made possible in a reasonably short time and within a selected
error limit.
The analyses of density and orientation of the drainage net show, as sug
gested by a number of observations in fields of various compositions, that these
values are very closely related to the structure and distribution of rocks which
