Transactions of the Symposium on Photo Interpretation

SOME METHODS AND INVESTIGATIONS FOR
DETERMINING THE QUALITY OF AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS
by Erik Welander
Geographical Survey Office, Stockholm
Abstract Starting from the conceptions of “resolving power” and “acutance” the evolu
tion towards the contrast transfer functions is described.
The different links of the image forming system, of which the aerial photograph is the final
result, are tackled with the aid of transfer functions. These links are, among others, the lens,
the emulsion, the image movement, the vibrations and the haze. Further, the brightness range
and the differences between the reflectance values of the terrain details are of special interest.
The transfer functions point out that image movement and haze cause the greatest image
deterioration. Some investigations into the effects of these two factors are reported. Transfer
functions obtained from the air at different velocities and with different amounts of haze are
shown. Here a simple form of test target was used.
Finally, an attempt to determine the contrast transfer functions for an aerial photograph with
out any test target is demonstrated. The applications to photo interpretation purposes are
discussed.
On a uti
Luftaufnahme ohne Testtafel veranschaulicht. Die Anwendungen für Photointerpretations
zwecke werden erörtert.
In recent years quite new test methods have been evolved in optics. These
methods are also of great interest in photogrammetry, because they offer essen-
