AIRPHOTO INTERPRETATION OF ORGANIC TERRAIN
FOR ENGINEERING PURPOSES
by Norman W. Radforth
Department of Biology, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario
Abstract Throughout the world, particularly in temperate zones, many very large ex
panses of mineral terrain are associated with an overburden of peat which, in turn, relates
botanically to the covering layer of vegetation. This complex of organic matter provides
characteristic landscapes known as Organic Terrain.
The basis on which the constitution of this terrain is identified from the air is dependent upon
recurring surficial patterns to which vegetal cover and microtopographic features both
contribute.
The patterns discernible by direct observation from 30,000 ft altitudes are interpreted and
compared. Differentiation is attempted through assessment of structural and water relation
ships.
The pertinent engineering factors basic in designing for overland communication are shown
and the means by which they can be predicted are discussed.
Technological advancement, modern exploration and economic necessity
are providing a composite stimulus for encouragement of exploitation of lands
which either have been ignored or avoided for one reason or another. In
Canada and in certain other countries, especially those where primary develop
ment has not yet attained its peak, these lands are relatively widespread. They
include that aspect of landscape now known as Organic Terrain [1,5] com
