FRACTURE PATTERNS OF THE NATURAL STEAM AREA
OF LARDERELLO, ITALY, FROM AIRPHOTOGRAPHS
by E. Marchesini, A. Pistolesi and M. Bolognini
Geomap, Florence, Italy
Abstract The study covers an area of approximately 1,300 sq.km in Tuscany (Italy) in
cluding the steam producing field of the “Larderello” Company with its power plant of
2.300,000,000 kW yearly output.
Easily recognizable faults, joint-systems and airphoto linears have been mapped from air-
photos, statistically processed, and compared with the surface geology, gravity, magnetometer,
radioactive and seismograph surveys, and with some information from wells.
The information collected from the airphotographs on the approximate scale of 1 : 15,000,
appears of primary interest with respect to both regional and local structure.
A definite correlation between the “dominant trend” of airphoto linears and the outline of the
producing area is observed.
To support general conclusions this first experimental study needs to be compared with others
on different producing areas.
The natural steam field of Larderello, in Central Italy, is exploited by
an electric power plant of 2,300,00,000 kW yearly output, operated by the
“Larderello S.p.A.”. It represents the oldest and the largest example of
economical exploitation of geothermic energy. A second steamfield (Amiata),
was discovered three years ago 90 km. SSE of the first, and it is now under
development by the same company (fig. 1).
