2.3. Obj«
The main objectives of the ITC Integrated Map and Geo-Information Production
system are:
- to integrate metric and attribute data acquired from position determination
systems, imaging systems and maps
- to build up integrated data bases for production of maps and geo
information
- to increase the production rate by introducing automated production
technology.
As a consequence of the perspective outlined, the Department of
Geo-Informatics of ITC is offering:
- specialized courses in the disciplines of Photogrammetry, Cartography,
Digital Image Processing of Remote Sensed Data and Geo-Information Systems
for Cadastral Applications to respond to the needs of target group A.
- integrated courses in Map and Geo-Information Production to respond to the
needs of target groups B and C respectively (management versus support and
development perspective)
- regular workshops for Executives of National Surveying and Mapping Agencies
(target group D).
This paper will further focus on the response to the needs of target group C
by means of the new ITC MSc Degree programme in Integrated Map and Geo-
Information Production which has been launched in January 1990.
Further information on the other courses of the Department of Geo-Informatics
can be found in the literature (ref. 3).
2. THE ITC MSC DEGREE PROGRAMME IN INTEGRATED MAP AND GEO-INFORMATION
PRODUCTION
2.1. Aim of the course
This programme aims to develop critical understanding and competence in the
handling and management of systems for the acquisition, processing,
transmission and presentation of geo-information.
On completion of this 2-year programme, participants should be able to
respond to the needs of a production manager in the design, upgrade,
evaluation, selection, procurement, implementation, monitoring and control of
a Geo-Information Production System, to communicate effectively with experts
in the associated fields of Computer Science, Systems Engineering, and
Marketing, to develop, use, and critically analyse geo-information
extraction, processing and representation procedures, and to initiate and
undertake production related research.
2.2. Target group
The programme will be relevant to those staff from geo-information production
and geo-information user organizations mostly concerned with the design,
testing, and introduction of integrated production systems for the purpose of
planning, administering, and monitoring the human environment (target group C
of figure 1).
The course will also be relevant to staff from research institutes and to
teachers of tertiary education institutes involved in the design,
introduction and running of courses in Integrated Map and Geo-Information
Production.
