5. FIRST EXPERIENCES
This is the first year of this new course. From a large group of applicants
ve selected fifteen .participants. The Dutch Ministry of Development
Cooperation granted us eight fellowships which were awarded to students from
Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, Tonga, Trinidad & Tobago, and
Zambia. Of the fifteen starters three have since transferred to other
courses; one into the second year of the IGP course to begin his research
immediately, one into the Cartography Postgraduate course as his interests
were strictly within the area of Computer Assisted Cartography, and one into
the Rural LIS Postgraduate course of our institute's Survey Integration
Group. It must be expected that while the course- is still new applicants may
not have a clear understanding of the contents and purpose of the course, and
the selection board may not realise, from the application form, that the
course is not entirely appropriate for a student.
