The aerospace photo pictures contain information on both
geometrical and energy (optical) characteristics of terrain.
However, unlike measurements of geometrical characteris
tics, measurements of energy characteristics of terrain ele
ments have not until recently found wide application. At pre
sent, due to development of space techniques for surveying
the Earth surface the latter measurements have considerably
grown in importance. The knowledge of optical properties of
terrain is necessary for supporting the expediency of costly
space surveys, optimizing their application modes and develop
ing quantitative (instrument and machine-assisted.) picture de
coding techniques.
The present paper is devoted to the basic concept and
major processes used in the technique for determining optical
characteristics of the terrain objects from the material of
the aerospace surveys.
Photographic photometry technique
The process of photometric measurements from the materials
of aerospace survey is illustrated on the schematic diagram
shorn in Fig. 1.
