Proceedings of the Symposium on Progress in Data Processing and Analysis

comparative studies
- Interrelations between changing technology, systems and
operation
An "Integrated Digital Photogrammetric Facility" (IDPF), the
design of which reflects the current state of knowledge, is
in operation at the National Ocean Service (NOS) of the NOAA
in Rockville, Md. (USA). Experience gained so far suggests that
such a system has enormous economic and organizational merits.
3.6. Acquisition and Use of Space Photographic Data
for mapping and map revision
(Intercommission WG I/11 ; chairmen: Dr V Kiselev, USSR,
and Prof Dr Karlheinz Marek, GDR)
Photographs taken from space have for three years been available
for broad commercial application. The Intercommission Working
Group I /11 studies the advantages and the fields of application
of space photography for mapping and map revision. It has been
established that space photographs having a ground resolution
of 3 to 10 m can be used for 1:50,000 mapping almost without
restriction. In map revision, the limit scale up to which space
photographs are of advantage is 1:25,000.
Other subjects investigated by this WG are
- Comparison between maps of a test field compiled from data
acquired with different sensing systems
- Study of the advantages of multizonal sensing systems
such as MK-4
- Combined use of spectrozonal images and radiothermal
microwave images
- Use of space photographs for ecological mapping and geological
exploration
