Figure 1. The illustration of the database model
Microsoft Access 97 is chosen to develop the database
including the users registration identity. The software is
best suited for a small database model. As the database
gets larger and more complicated, high-end database
program should be employed.
The next step that should be considered in
developing the thematic database is to provide the
accurate information consisting of
(1) Metadata - the data about data which provides
description of the data set
(2) The browsed graphic of the thematic map, that
gives brief illustration about the data set
(3) The digital thematic maps, that can downloaded
directly from the system. The basic concept of the
on-line thematic database can be seen in figure 2
Refer to the illustration in figure 2, the steps of the on
line model establishment are:
1. Dataset Preparation
The dataset that should be prepared for this study is;
digital maps, browsed graphic of the digital maps and the
metadata.
The thematic digital maps were assembled into
similar GIS standardization, which was using the LPI
(Indonesian coastal environment) or Rupabumi format.
The digital maps were developing with GIS software.
Then, the data were converted into the arcview format to
be stored into a permanent retrievable form. From these
maps, the browsed graphics were derived to represent the
performance of the representative digital maps using GIF
format. This step is done with Adobe Photoshop and
PaintshopPro software.
