The result has been that a global coverage only exists at scales
smaller than 1:250 000. At 1:50 000 about 2/3 of the land area
are covered and at 1:25 000 about 1/3.
What is even more alarming is that the present update rate for
the 1:50 000 map is only 2.3 % and that of a 1:25 000 map 4.9
%. Thus the average age of a 1:50 000 map is 45 years and that
of a 1:25 000 map 25 years (see figure 5).
