The range data acquired by BIRIS camera were proces 
sed through a software for 3D virtual model genera 
tion, developed by Image Processing Group at Univer 
sity of Padua. An example of resulting 3D model is 
depicted in Figure 8. Along with such VRML file, the 
processing software produced an ASCII output file by 
which, still using Surfer, the corresponding DEM was 
extracted (Fig. 9). 
The results are reported in Table 1, in which the diffe 
rences between only 45 points for brevity sake are 
listed. Since the measurements were carried out in two 
different reference systems, a coordinates transforma 
tion was performed through a tool of OrthoEngine 
software in order to make the comparison between 
values referred to the same coordinate system.

4 DEM COMPARISON AND RESULTS 
In order to evaluate the accuracy of BIRIS camera for 
3D object model generation, the DEM extracted with 
this laser scanner system was compared with that 
obtained by digital photogrammetry triangulation.
