Title
Proceedings of the Symposium on Global and Environmental Monitoring

The airborne lidar LARSEN, a remote sensor for
coastal mapping, is now used regularly by the
Canadian Hydrographic Service for hydrographic
surveys of Canada's coastal waters. Since
1985, it has carried out surveys of, for
example, the Cambridge Bay region in the North
West Territories, the St Lawrence River, and
the coast of Vancouver Island (Casey and
Vosburgh, 1986).
The laser fluorosensor, which was developed
and flown for oilspill monitoring, is
undergoing further upgrades to a survey system
for marine pollution and water quality
monitoring, under a program supported by the
Department of Environment and others (Dick et
al, 1990).
CONCLUSION
Sensor developments at CCRS include new
airborne systems and techniques for signature
measurement. The developments are supported by
airborne data acquisition and pilot projects
which provide improved understanding of the
imaging processes related to earth
observation. The sensor program has helped to
establish advanced sensor technology in
Canada, to develop application expertise, and
to explore new application areas and target
signatures that can be used for remote
sensing. Major developments have been in the
areas of synthetic aperture radar and
multispectral imager systems.
