4 APPLICATION OF HISTORICAL MAPS 
As the application of historical maps to GIS or virtual 
archeology, city and scene modeling of historical row of stores 
and houses on a street were performed using extracted the 
attribute data. The detail procedures for modeling are as 
follows: 
1) The attribute data were extracted using mathematical 
morphology. 
2) Remapping were performed using TIN model and Affine 
transformation. 
3) Classification of the attribute data were performed by 
overlapping. 
4) 3D models of the typical samurai residences were 
reconstructed using 3D CG soft ware. 
5) 3D models of the typical townsman houses were also 
reconstructed using 3D CG soft ware. 
6) The historical map and the 3D models were connected by 
authoring soft. 
7) The historical map and current map are appeared upper parts 
on the monitor using menu command, scene model of the

historical row of stores and houses on a street are appeared 
lower parts on the monitor by clinking the some point on the 
historical map. Similar, the current picture corresponding to the 
same point are appeared on the monitor. 
8) City models are also obtained by menu command. 
Figure 17 shows scene model and figure 18 shows city model. 
These are simple example, but people can appreciate several 
scene and city models form various view points. 
5 CONCLUSION AND FURTHER WORK 
In order to utilize historical maps to GIS or virtual archeology, 
the extraction and classification method of the attribute data 
which exists in historical maps were described using 
mathematical morphology and TIN model. The remarkable 
points of this paper are its ability to apply historical maps to 
GIS and virtual archeology, and these application examples 
were also demonstrated in this paper. 
There are issues, however, for further work. These problems 
include extracting special area such as boundary lines or small 
characters and insufficient clarity color.
