however some types of data can be evaluated in a
combined analysis; e g. GPS and inertial measurement
are integrated to compute a continuous vehicle track and
to overcome gaps caused by blocked satellite signals.
WUMMS is both complete and independent. Some
processing can take place in the mapping vehicle e g.
road mappmg and object measurement etc. Because all
data collected by WUMMS are related to geographic
position, a GIS is the appropriate tool for stormg the
data. Due to the multitude of different sensors employed
for data collection, a multi-media GIS must be utilized
which supports a variety of data types file formats,
storage media and output devices. For managing the
information extracted from mobile mapping system, we
distinguish between spatial data and attribute data.
Spatial data consisted of three-dimensional vectors and
geo-coded raster. Attribute are features that are stored as
record in a relational database Spatial and attribute data
are tied together by database management software.
4 APPLICATION AND EXPECTATION
WUMMS has been applied in such fields as automatic
vehicle navigation, surveying and mapping of building,
generation of measurement road network. In addition to
these, WUMMS will have a variety of applications
including Highway-mapping, City model plotting,
utility mapping, etc. For instance, in highway related
applications, it may be traffic signal inventor,
monitoring of speed and parking violations and road
surface condition inspection The data acquisition is
performed without blocking traffic. The information
obtained is diverse-a single collection can be used for
multiple purpose. Moreover, because data can be both
collected and processed in a short period of time,
frequent and repetitive road surveys and database
updating are both possible and affordable. In the
application to facility, the CCD cameras can photograph
high voltage power transmission lines, and their position
can be measured from the image sequences. The
position of the pole and towers, the position of the
insulators on each line which support the msulators on
each line which support the suspending transmission
lme segments and the lowest points of the suspending
line segments can be determined simultaneously.
Typical application of mobile mapping system include:
• Digital mappmg of roads and railway.
• Surveying on of pipelines, water and sewer
systems;
• Surveying and tracking the evolution of
distribution networks;
• Inventory of structure and infrastructures,
• Data collection for the generation of transporta
tion database.
It is especially emphasized that MMS technology is an
information acquisition way with high integration,
automation and streamline. It provides a revolutionary
means for data acquisition in modem digital mappmg
and GIS . As the important data source of urban GIS and
digital mapping, its potential application appears to be
limitless.
With the development of communication and image
compression technology, real-time image data link from
a field mobile mapping system to an office can be
realized. Furthermore, such data can be disseminated
and accessed through a widely distributed Internet. The
fusion of image, vector feature and base map data could
be dealt with digital mappmg presentation, real-time
processing and integration with other data would be
enormously exciting.
