113 AN ATTEMPTED FOREST CLASSIFICATION AT THE REGIONAL LEVEL USING ERTS-1 MSS IMAGERY U. Nielsen and J.M. Wightman Forest Management Institute ABSTRACT Canada's forests have been classified by a number of investigators using data from a variety of sources and applying different classification criteria. In 1971, Nielsen and Wightman concluded that the uniformity of data provided by ultra-small-scale aerial photography could advantageously be used to revise and update broad forest classifications. The availability of satellite data, such as that from the Earth Resources and Technology Satellite (ERTS-1), provides a potentially better source of up-to-date information. This paper discusses the possibilities of using ERTS-1 imagery in the production of regional forest maps. As an example, a forest classification map of the Province of Ontario is presented. RESUME Les forêts canadiennes ont été classifiées par plusieurs chercheurs à partir de données provenant d'une foule de sources et au moyen de différents critères de classification. En 1971, Nielsen et Wightman trouvaient que l'uniformité des données fournies par les photographies aériennes à très petite échelle pourrait avantageusement servir à la révision et à la remise à jour de la classification générale des forêts. La disponibilité des données recueillies par satellites comme le satellite de détection des ressources terrestres (ERTS-1) permet d'utiliser des renseignements plus fiables. L'étude discute des possibilités d'utilisation des photographies transmises par les satellites ERTS-1 pour l'établissement de cartes forestières régionales. Pour illustrer ceci, on présente une carte des types de forêts de la province d'Ontario. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Kanadas Forsten sind von einer Reihe von Forstfachleuten unter Verwendung von Daten aus verschiedenen Quellen und unter Anlegung unterschiedlicher Klassifizierungskriterien klassifiziert worden. 1971 sind Nielsen und Wightman zu dem Schluß gekommen, daß die Einheitlichkeit der in kleinstmaßstäblichen Luftbildern dargebotenen Daten vorteilhaft bei der Nachfuhrung breitgefaßter Forstklassifizierungen eingesetzt werden könnten. Die Verfügbarkeit von Satellitendaten, wie z.B. von dem Erdforschungs- satelliten ERTS-1, bietet eine potentiell bessere Quelle neuester Informationen. In dieser Arbeit werden die Möglichkeiten des Einsatzes von ERTS-l-Bildem bei der Herstellung von regionalen Forstkarten erörtert. Als Beispiel wird eine Forstklassifizierungskarte der Provinz Ontario vorgestellt.
