APPLICABILITY OF
A SYSTEMATIC AIR PH OTO-INTERPRE TATI ON
PROCEDURE FOR THE PREPARATION OF LARGE
SCALE SOIL MAPS
P.M.Jawade & T.R.Srinivasan
Indian Photo-interpretation Institute,
Dehra Dun, India.
ABSTRACT
The degree of utility of a basic procedure of systematic air
photo-interpretation normally used for medium and small scale soil
mapping has been tested in respect of large scale soil mapping of an
area 17750 ha. Detailed soil survey of a narrow zigzag sample strip
furnished the basis for the interpretation of all the 33 photos, which
was accomplished in the field camp itself. 123 soil observations were
made in the sample strip of an area of 295 ha. This was followed by
a selective check comprising only 5 0 observations outside the strip to
arrive at a soil map for the whole area with soil units defined in terms
of soil family qualified by slopes and erosion phases. To test the
accuracy of the resulting soil map, one section of it where no previous
soil observations were sited was subjected to an intensive grid check;
it was found that the photo-interpretation map for this section had a
high degree of accuracy. The study has revealed that soil survey out
put can be considerably increased and soil boundary delineations can be
achieved with a higher degree of confidence, consistency and accuracy
by adopting this technique.
ABSTRAIT
L'étude a
