FOREST FIRE SPREAD AND ENERGY OUTPUT DETERMINED FROM
LOW ALTITUDE INFRARED IMAGERY
B. D. Lawson
Department of the Environment, Canadian Forestry Service, Canada
ABSTRACT
A commercially available infrared imaging system, AGA Thermovision
680, has been adapted to provide forest fire behavior research data which is
used in the development of forest fire control guidelines.
The infrared system is mounted in a light aircraft and imagery of
forest fires is flown at altitudes ranging from 300 to 3700 m above the fire,
depending on fire size. Ten-color imagery is produced on a cathode ray tube
monitor and recorded by 35 mm camera on demand.
Photo interpretation involves measuring a fire's rate of advance
over discrete time intervals by correcting successive photographs of the
infrared imagery for scale and tilt and measuring the displacement of the
fire frontal positions on each pair of photographs. Relative fire energy
outputs can be compared among fires by using the infrared imagery to integrate
temperature and area over time.
This application of infrared sensing has made quantitative measure
ments of fire behavior available to the researcher which formerly could be
obtained only from ground instrumented test fires. Operational wildfire
behavior can now be mapped and quantified at reasonable cost, opening up a
large new source of research data of potential benefit to fire suppression
operations.
