INTERPRETATION OF VEGETATION DAMAGE, EXTENSIVELY MANAGED LANDS Peter A. Murtha University of British Columbia, Canada ABSTRACT The state-of-the-art in photo interpretation of damage to vegeta tion over extensively managed lands is presented. Very few advances have been made in the last two years. Some investigations, it seems, have become bogged down in scratching at minor and sometimes irrelevant details of a technique. General principles have been laid down, and confirmed. It is now up to research institutions, governmental bodies, universities, and even consultants to accept some of the methods and put them into general use. Future needs are discussed. RESUME Il est présenté ici, une revue des connaissances acquises jusqu’à maintenant dans le domaine de la photo-interprétation, appliquée à l'inventaire des dommages du couvert végétal dans les territoires d'aménagement extensif. Très peu de progrès ont été réalisés dans ce domaine au cours des deux dernières années. Il semble que la plupart des études se soient orientées vers des problèmes mineurs ou parfois même vers des détails techniques insignifiants. Certains principes généraux furent énoncés et confirmés. Il en revient maintenant aux institutions de recherches, agences gouvernementales, universités et même aux ingénieurs conseils, d'accepter certaines méthodes déjà dévelopées et de les faire passer à l'usage général. Une discussion des besoins futurs est aussi incluse. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Ein Gesamtüberblick über die derzeitige Lage der Photointerpreta tion von Vegetationsschädigungen extensiv bewirtschafteter Landschaftsräume ist gegeben. Man kann wohl mit Recht sagen, dass in den vergangenen zwei Jahren nur geringfügige Fortschritte erzielt worden sind. Einige Untersuchungen haben anscheinend ihre Zielsetzung verloren und befassen sich mit unwichtigen und manchmal sogar belanglosen Nebensächlichkeiten. Denn die allgemeinen methodischen Grundlagen sind erstellt und als richtig bestätigt worden. Es ist jetzt an der Zeit, dass sich Forschungsabteilungen, Regierungsstellen, Universitäten und sogar Fachberater dieser Methode annehmen und diese auch zur allgemeinen Anwendung bringen. Abschliessend werden die Grundlagen für die zukünftige Weiterentwicklung dieses Fachgebietes erläutert.
