A3 AN AID TO DETECTING JARRAH DIEBAcK

ABSTRACT 
A two-stage interpretation system for the detection 
of dieback caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands in jarrah 
(Euc alyptus m argi nata SmJ forests of western Australia is 
described and evaluated. The system involves a combination 
of sample strips of large-scale 70 mm colour aerial photo 
graphy and complete coverage by small-scale panchromatic 
photography. In the large-scale phase detection of the 
disease is based on symptoms in individuals of the under- 
storey vegetation. 
Reliable detection of the disease symptoms can be 
achieved with the large-scale photographs but further 
research is required to improve the reliability of the saiall- 
scale phase of the system.

Description et étude des deux phases du procédé 
de détection du ralentissement de la croissance du jarrah 
( Eucalyptus marginata Sm) des forets d’Australie Occidentale, 
provoqué par ïe Phy t ophthora cinnamomi Rands » 
^Uette méthode concerne d’une part l'utilisation de 
bandes d'échantillons à grande échelle de ~f0 m/m. de photo 
graphies aériennes en couleur et d'autre part, la photo 
graphie complète des lieux, au moyen du procédé panchro 
matique à petite échelle. Le premier procédé est basé sur 
les symptômes recontrés sur certains arbres des sous-bois. 
La confirmation de la détection des symptômes de 
la maladie peut être établie par la photographiera grande 
échelle, mais de plus amples recherches doivent être 
effectuées pour corroborer les résultats du système a petite 
échelle. 
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG 
Ein zweiphasisches Auslegungssystem fur die 
Entdeckung des durch Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands verursacht 
in Jarrah ( Eucalyptus marginata Sm) Waldüngen in West 
Australien ist beschrieben und bewertet. Das System 
besteht aus einer Vereinigung zwischen Musterstreifen t von 
70 m/m. Bunt-Luftaufnahmen in Grossmasstab und vollständiges 
Umfassen des Geländes durch panchromatische Photographie in 
Kleinmasstab. Die Entdeckung der Krankheit im grossmass-
