CHANGE FOR SELECTED U.S. METROPOLITAN AREAS: AN EXPERIMENT

ABSTRACT 
Successful experiments in mapping urban land use, through employment of 
pattern recognition algorithms in a digital computer by processing multi spec 
tral scanner data from Earth Resources Technology Satellite-1, have been con 
ducted by researchers of the Geography Program, U.S. Geological Survey and 
the Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing, Purdue University. Map 
forms are computer line-printer output and colored prints from a film recorder. 
Numerous categories of land use and land cover were identified and mapped to 
make full use of the potential of the computer/scanner system. Several in 
novations in machine-aided analysis were developed in response to: (1) making 
rural/urban distinctions; (2) arranging data in map format; (3) aggregating 
results by statistical units; and (4) solving other peripheral problems. 
Recitation and critique of the evolved methodology reveals progress made, 
identifies limitations of the system, and suggests directions for future 
improvement.

Les Chercheurs du. Programme géographique du Service géologique des Etats- 
Unis, en collaboration avec le Laboratoire pour l'application de la télédétec 
tion de l'Université 1 Purdue, viennent de mener avec succès des expériences 
cartographiques sur 1'utilization du sol urbain. Comme procédé, ils ont 
utilisé les algorithmes d'indication des patrons, à l'aide d'un ordinateur 
numérique et en manipulant les données transmises par un lecteur à spectre 
multiple monté sur "Earth Resources Technology Satellite-1". Les formes 
de carte ont été le produit de la linotypie raccordée à un ordinateur, aussi 
bien que des imprimés colorés pourvus par un enregistreur photographique. 
Elles ont permis d'identifier et de reproduire cartographiquement les dif 
férentes catégories d'utilisation et de couverture du sol, de sorte ci exploit 
er au maximum le potentiel du système ordinateur-lecteur. Il a été possible 
d'apporter plusieurs innovations aux analyses faites à l'aide des machines 
pour ce qui concerne: 1) la distinction rurale-urbaine; 2) l'assemblage des 
données sous forme cartographique; 3) le groupement statistique des résultats; 
et 4) la solution de problèmes périphériques. La présentation et la critique 
de la méthode développée révèle un avancement aussi bien que les limites de 
cette technique, et suggère des indications pour un ultérieur perfectionnement.
