SATELLITE IMAGERY APPLIED TO EARTH SCIENCE 
IN CANADA

ABSTRACT 
The problems of interpreting monochrome ERTS imagery are considered and 
compared with the two types of colour image produced in Canada. For 
interpretation purposes, colour prints are considered to be far more 
informative than monochrome material. 
ERTS imagery has aroused the interest of many geologists, but with few 
exceptions, specific applications are not being recognised as easily as had 
been expected, ERTS has been accepted as an educational tool. In mosaic form 
ERTS imagery will be used for broad regional studies and also as topographic 
map Underlays for geophysical data. It is generally recognised that there is 
a need in Canada for small scale imagery to assist geologists in mapping 
programmes, particularly at 1:250,000 scale. Because of its limited ground 
resolution, it appears probable that ERTS imagery will be only partially 
satisfactory for this purpose. 
RESUME 
L’auteur étudie les difficultés que comporte l'interprétation des photos 
monochromes de 1 1 ERTS et les compare aux deux genres de photos en couleurs 
produites au Canada. On estime que les épreuves en couleurs constituent, 
pour l'interprétation, une source de renseignements beaucoup plus riche que 
les épreuves monochromes. 
Les photos de 1‘ERTS ont suscité l'intérêt de plusieurs géologues, mais 
sauf quelques rares exceptions, on ne reconnaît pas aussi facilement que 
prévu les usages particuliers qu'on peut en faire. On admet que 1'ERTS est un 
instrument d'enseignement. Assemblées en mosaïques, les photos de 1'ERTS 
seront utilisées pour de vastes études régionales et comme fonds de cartes 
topographiques pour la représentation de données géophysiques. Il est 
généralement reconnu qu'on a besoin au Canada de photos prises à petite 
échelle, particuliérement à l'échelle de 1:250,000, afin d'aider les 
géologues dans leurs programmes de cartographie. Cependant, à cause de leur 
pouvoir de résolution limité au sol, il semble probable que les photos de 
1'ERTS ne seront que partiellement satisfaisantes dans cette utilisation. 
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG 
Die Probleme der Interpretation von ERTS-Schwarzweißbildern werden 
erörtert und mit den in Kanada produzierten zwei Arten von Farbbildern 
verglichen. Fur Interpretationszwecke sind Farbpositive als weitaus 
informationshaltiger als Schwarzweißbilder zu betrachten. 
Die ERTS-Aufnahmen haben das Interesse zahlreicher Geologen gefunden, 
jedoch wurden - von wenigen Ausnahmen abgesehen - fest umrissene 
Anwendungsmöglichkeiten nicht mit der erwarteten Leichtigkeit erkannt. ERTS 
hat als Bildungsmittel Anerkennung gefunden. Man wird ERTS-Bilder i.n der Form 
von Mosaiks bei weiträumigen regionalen Untersuchungen und auch als Quelle 
geophysischer Daten für topographische Kartierungen einsetzen. Es wird
