ADVANCES IN AUTOMATIC EXTRACTION OF
INFORMATION FROM MULTISPECTRAL SCANNER DATA
Jon D. Erickson
Environmental Research Institute of Michigan
Ann Arbor, Michigan
ABSTRACT
Recent advances and present status of automatic multispectral scanner
data analysis and interpretation is evaluated with problem areas and suggested
approaches to solutions discussed. The rationale for automatic extraction is
given.
The basis of spectral discrimination is briefly examined indicating
sources of systematic variability which tend to obscure the spectral
attributes of the classes of interest. Spatial and temporal discrimination
bases are also discussed.
Automatic processing functions, techniques and methods, and equipment
are discussed with emphasis on techniques and equipment required for operational
large area surveys with satellite data. Techniques for carrying out major
functions of preprocessing for signature extension, feature extraction,
discrimination, display, and applications modeling are examined. The
development of the MIDAS multispectral processor system which represents
a breakthrough in cost effective high throughput processing is reviewed.
Applications and results are discussed for environmental monitoring
and resources surveys to indicate the substantial success achieved to date.
It is concluded that despite the potential indicated in the many
successful demonstrations in various application disciplines in the last
two years, operational uses of information derived from multispectral sensing
of earth resources and land use still awaits employment of cost effective
processing systems.
d’extraction automatique.
