MULTI SPECTRAL PHOTO INTERPRETATION
WITH FLICKER AND COLOUR PRESENTATION ON
THE ITC 8—IMAGE CAROUSSEL
N.J. Mulder & S.A. Hempenius
Physics Department ITC,
Enschede, The Netherlands
SUMMARY
Investigations on visual interpretation of eight (or less) multi
spectral images presented onto one screen by the novel ITC 8-image Caroussel
are reported. The single lamp instrument projects, 3x enlarged, up to eight
60 mm x 60 mm transparencies through one objective on a table-top screen.
Modes of operation are T colour additive projection 1 , ’flicker projection’,
and their combination. The arbitrary succession of single images, pairs or
triplets, etc. in slow motion or in rapid cyclic series with adjustable
repetition frequency of up to 30 Hz, when working in the flickering mode,
allows one for the first time to investigate the possibilities of the human
visual system to extract in one operation information ’hidden’ in several
images. The research concentrates on visual faculties which can be
exploited for discrimination and identification of objects in multi-spectral
and multi-temporal MSS images. They include colour viewing, detection of
flickering fields, and disappearance of fluctuations in the presented series
when passing the critical flicker frequency (CFF).
