787 LAND USE MAPPING BY COMPUTER PROCESSING OF SATELLITE IMAGERY R. F. Mills Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ABSTRACT A number of unsupervised classification systems have been developed for the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) multispectral imagery on digital tape. Most suffer from being (1) too complex for use by those not highly trained in statistical methods/computer processing, (2) not as suc cessful as supervised techniques, or (3) too costly in terms of computer time to be implemented with the size data set desired by many disciplines. Investigations are in progress to determine what degree of data manipulation will produce thematic maps of sufficient accuracy, resolution and scale to be readily applicable to natural resource and regional planning problems at costs competitive with more conventional methods. Preliminary results indicate that the level of operation necessary is much lower than commonly supposed, and can be implemented by those without a great deal of statistical sophistication. RÄStfME Un certain nombre de méthodes de classification auto matique ont été développées pour traiter sur ordinateur les images multispectrales obtenues par satellite (EPTS). La plupart de ces méthodes présentent l’inconvénient (1) d’étre d’un usage trop complexe pour ceux n’ayant pas une solide for mation aux méthodes statistiques et au traitement sur or dinateur, (2) de n’avoir pas autant de^facteurs de réussite que les autres techniques où l’interprétation est réalisée par l’homme, (3) d’être coûteuse car elles exigent trop de temps d'ordinateur rendu nécessaire par l'abondance des données à traiter dans de nombreuses disciplines.
