ABSTRACT
Northern pocket gophers (Thomomys talpoides Richardson) are small
burrowing mammals occurring primarily between 98° and 120° west longitude
and 36° and 52° north latitude in North America. Over much of this range, the

species occurs primarily in montane and subalpine grasslands and meadows.
In the northern part of this range they are found also in lowland situations.
High populations may cause serious soil disturbance and consume much herbage;
population control may be required on lands with high intensity multiple

management.
Large-scale, 1:600 and 1:1200, normal color and color infrared
ce 172:
aerial photographs were studied to determine if this remote sensing system
could be used to assess populations of northern pocket gophers in subalpine
grasslands in Colorado, U.S.A. Mounds of soil produced by these animals in
late summer, which are highly correlated with population density, were interpreted
from the photographs. It was determined that population estimates from the
photographs were 97 percent as accurate as estimates made by ground evaluation.
ress, England.
The 1:600 scale color infrared photographs were most useful. Also, kind of
vegetation, relatively high or low, had no apparent effect (P = .05) on the
ability of photointerpreters to identify imaged earth mounds. Differences
(P = .05) among interpreters were negligible.

RESUME
Ltd., London.
