521 Government becomes convinced of direct benefits from remote sensing. Ontario The Ontario Centre for Remote Sensing (OCRS) in Surveys and Mapping Branch, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, received final approval in September and was identified as an office in November, 1973. The centre is implementing an expansion schedule. The staff, presently ten (8 professionals, 2 support) should reach twenty-three (10 professionals, 13 support) by 1977. (See Figure 3.) The centre provides an information service to the public, co-ordinates remote sensing activities and offers a variety of training courses in the province, conducts applied research, handles specialized airborne sensing activities and performs multidisciplinary interpretation services within the provincial government. The OCRS is the provincial link with CCRS. Quebec Remote sensing activities are intensive within research bodies in the province of Quebec; however, plans for central co-ordination have not yet advanced. Maritime Provinces New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island have an interprovincial committee, the Maritime Regional Committee on Remote Sensing, at management level, to co-ordinate the interests of the three provinces and to finalize a plan for the Maritime Centre for Remote Sensing. Each of the three provinces has a provincial committee with a membership of senior special ists to analyse its needs and the nature of its involvement, and to provide representation in the national program. Although a tentative proposal for a regional centre has been drafted by the Maritime Regional Committee, it has not yet been finalized for submission to the Council of Maritime Premiers. Newfoundland So far, remote sensing affairs have been looked after by Memorial University of Newfoundland. Attempts are being made to form a committee in the immediate future, which could make plans for the establishment of a regional centre and seek support from the provincial government. Meanwhile, the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, MUN, conducts intensive remote sensing research, offers an image library of ERTS and ERTS Fiche, and provides a free information service.
