Roland & Dietrich Helmcke Freie Universität Berlin ABSTRACT With the conclusion of a visual geological interpre tation of ERTS-1 imagery of the Tibesti Mountains it becomes obvious that certain elements of image interpretation ( e. g. grey tone, texture) are more important in the interpretation of satellite imagery than of aerial photography. Interpreta - tion of orbital images, aerial photographs and ground truth investigations can substitute each other very little, but are mutually complementary methods. By means of some examples it is shown that especially for less known areas like the Tibesti, satellite imagery may provide a lot of additional geological information. RESUME Dans une première étude géologique des images prises par ERTS-1 du Tibesti, il apparait que certains éléments de l'interprétation de l'image (par example tone gris, texture ) sont d'une grande importance pour l'explication des images prises par satellite vis-à-vis des photos aériennes stéréosco piques. L'interprétation des images prises par satellite,celle des photos aériennes et le travail de terrain ne peuvent se remplacer l'un l'autre, mais se complètent parfaitement. Quel ques examples montrent que, surtout dans certaines régions moins connues comme le Tibesti, l'image donnée par satellite peut fournir toute une série d'informations géologiques sup plémentaires . ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Mit dem Vorliegen einer ersten geologischen Auswer tung von ERTS-1 Aufnahmen des Tibesti-Gebirges zeigt sich,daß bestimmten Elementen der Bildinterpretation (z.B. Grauton,Tex tur) bei der Ausdeutung von Satellitenbildern gegenüber der Auswertung stereoskopischer Luftbilder erhöhte Bedeutung zu - kommt. Satellitenbildinterpretation, Luftbildauswertung und Geländeuntersuchung ersetzen sich gegenseitig nur in geringem Umfang, ergänzen sich aber in sinnvoller Weise. An einigen Beispielen wird aufgezeigt, daß vor allem in weniger bekann - ten Gebieten, wie dem Tibesti-Gebirge, das Satellitenbild ei ne Reihe zusätzlicher geologischer Informationen zu liefern vermag.
