ERFAHRUNGEN BEI DER LUFTBILDINTERPRETATION
IM TROPISCHEN NEU-GUINEA
von Ernst Reiner
Kabul
Abstract The interpretation of areas without appreciable vegetation in Australia allows
one to undertake the investigation of areas larger than 50,000 km 2 , whilst in New Guinea
the interpretation of areas under a dense vegetation is restricted to about 3,000-6,000 km 2
for a typical survey area. The size of an area depends mainly on what is “inherent” to the
land.
Early investigation in North Australia has led to the recognition of “photo-patterns” which
have been followed through the airphotos to fix boundaries of areas “of the same topography,
soil and vegetation”. These units later have been named “land systems”. Such photo-patterns
do not directly apply to areas under a dense vegetation.
The practical work with airphotos in New Guinea and the checking of the interpretation
during ground control allows a very good knowledge to be gained. Results of the interpreta
tion were purely directed towards practical purposes.
