ENGINEERING INFORMATION OF
ARCTIC AREAS OBTAINED FROM AERIAL IMAGERY
by Robert D. Leighty
Photographic Interpretation Research Division, U.S. Army Gold Regions Research and
Engineering Laboratory, Hanover, N.H. U.S.A.
Abstract Successful utilisation of remote and often inaccessible arctic areas to suit man’s
need - scientific, engineering, economic or military — is contingent on knowing the identity
and physical properties of soils and rocks and how they will behave when disturbed.
This understanding is of utmost importance to the engineer who must locate, design and
build all types of structures so that they will perform satisfactorily. Because of the often re
moteness and inaccessibility of much of the Arctic, all aspects of engineering are costly and time
consuming. It is in this field where intelligent use of air photos cannot only result in consider
able saving in time and money, but may result in obtaining more information with a higher
degree of accuracy than by more conventional ground survey procedures. This paper points
out how the user can proceed in organizing important aspects of the arctic terrain in obtaining
information from air photos which will be useful in solving engineering problems related to
soils and permafrost.
The Problem
Increasing exploitation of the Arctic for military and economic purposes
makes this a region of ever-increasing interest to the engineering profession.
