(b) The Ministry of Environment, Town Planning and Public Works, whose
facilities are going to be used by the new Hellenic Organization for
Cadastre and Cartography. It works mainly on the scale 1:1000.
(c) The Ministry of Agriculture,
(d) The Public Electricity Company,
(e) The Forestry Service,
(f) The Ministry of Culture, and
(g) The Centre for the preservation of the Mount Athos Heritage.
From the above organizations, the first two operate the main bulk
of photogrammetric instruments and manpower. The first three work exclu
sively with aerial surveys; the last two have small laboratories (one plotter
each) oriented towards architectural photogrammetry.
The private firms belong to nearly self-trained enthusiasts of
photogrammetry. They are small (one-plotter companies) and are operated
by the owners-production engineers and external part timers. The latter
are called to participate in the production each period work exists.
Private firms have to face the opposition of the traditional and
rather well organized land surveyors. Active private sector photogrammet-
rists are not well organized professionwise.
Remote Sensing is being practiced by the aforementioned organiza
tions under (a) and (b) plus the meteorological service. Remote Sensing
services are offered by very few private establishments, which usually
operate as satelitte data distributors as well. Not rarely they sell relevant
soft- and hardware. No private sector professional earn his living solely
from remote sensing in this country.
The above outline of the professions related to Photogrammetry
and Remote Sensing is certainly not encouraging in a period of rapid tech
nological changes and in a country with a huge volume of work to be done.
Ten years ago, in a paper about the world status of photogrammetric edu
cation and research, Branderberger (1980) had stated:
. It is recognized that the stronger the profession’s education
system is, the stronger is the profession itself. This is reflected
in a profession’s organizational and administrative structure and
structuring of its education system.
