Choice of Operating System
The Schedule
92
Basically the choice of operating system in this kind of system
is depend on the GIS Map Server platform and Web Server
Platform. Both UNIX and Windows NT have its own
advantages and disadvantages. In this project implementation,
the operating system used here is Windows NT 4.0 Server. This
is because the web server is on Windows NT. hi this system,
there is no GIS Map Server, since this GIS Internet System is
very simple, and according to several constraints.
To develop this system, assumed that the map data is in the
digital format already, it takes 60 days. The schedule is
including the data collection, interface design, web
programming (in MS Frontpage ’98), Java Script and Java Class
Programming (Using Java Development Kit from SUN
Microsystems) to improve the JShape tool, internet publishing
and training to the users and administrators.
The implementation schedule for this system is as follows.

Further Development
For further development, this system should be enhanced by
adding:
1. Better spatial database access by using spatial data
warehousing
2. Better and more communicative user interface by using
Java Class, and the latest internet web-design technology
3. Better Internet GIS shell. This can be done both by
improving the existing JShape Java Class, or using web-
application that can be developed using several
programming languages such as Oracle, MS Visual Basic,
Powerbuilder, etc, using GIS Active X’s such as Maplnfo
MapX, and ESRI MapObject.
Alternative System
As an alternative of this system, the map server-based GIS is the
best choice. This technology uses Internet Map Server kind
software (such as Maplnfo MapXtreme, ESRI IMS, Sicad IMS,
and Autodesk Mapguide). The application for this kind of
system will be developed under web-based application
development environment (such as MS Visual Interdev,
HAHTSite, and ColdFusion) using GIS Client object (such as
Maplnfo MapX, ESRI MapObject, etc)
The architecture diagram is as follows:

The diagram shows us a slightly different system than the
system we proposed. Instead of having applet and doing the
local processing, the system described in the diagram above
using client-server processing and server side application-based
processing.
