The structures uncovered in Ancona were measured using
traditional topographic methods to obtain a plan (complete with
heights) true to an approximation of 5 cm.
This survey was the first step of the work, and allowed to obtain
a model of the site before the excavation (in situ state). We then
proceeded to the graphic reconstruction of the Roman
warehouses to obtain a virtual reality depicting the salient
features of Ancona's Roman harbour warehouses in the 2™
century A.D.
First, after transferring the plan by reporting all the heights of
the different levels into an Autocad software, we modelled the
present state of the excavation; then, after identifying the items
of Roman time and removing all later ones (e.g. medieval
additions), we began to model the warehouses by identifying
two type cells ascribable to the two building periods, the epochs
of Augustus and Trajan, respectively.
This process yielded two models, one of the present state of the
excavation, the other depicting the reconstruction of the Roman
harbour warehouses of the 2™ century A.D.
These models were subsequently imported into programme
3Dstudio Max. Here, using mapping and visual simulation
procedures, we obtained a three-dimensional virtual reality
showing the site before the excavation with the finds in their
current condition and a functional subdivision of the buildings
of the different periods, and subsequently the reconstruction of
the harbour warehouses, including their interior, which may
eventually be used to design a plan for the reclamation of the
area.
