calculated by the equation : 
LD = log (xl.x2.x3.x4.x5 xn) 
= x 
The composite ‘LD’ intensity index map can then 
be contoured to get ‘LD’ intensity map of the area. If 
such map is prepared prior to the starting of the mining 
activity, this will really be helpful for future smooth 
running of the mining operation in any area. 
CONCLUSION 
Land degradation due to mining activity is 
inevitable. At the same time, the developmental activity 
cannot be arrested also. It is we to see that how 
judiciously it can be performed. Few case studies have 
demonstrated that remote sensing can play an important 
role in this process. GIS analysis can be applied for 
modelling ‘LD’ due to mining.
