3. THE PROCESSES OF LAND USE / COVER
CHANGE AND TRENDS IN THREE GORGES
RESERVOIR AREA AT NEARLY 30 YEARS
3.1 The range of area change of land use
Formula 1 indicates the range of six land use types on the
Three Gorges reservoir in 1972 -1986. 1986-2000 and 1972-

The results showed that from 1972 to 2000 nearly 30 years of
time, the area of 6 land use types have occurred in different
degrees, the area of 3 land use types decreased, while others
increased. In the type whose area increased, the reduction of the
woodland area was the biggest, which is 48062.80 hm 2 ; the
reduction of water area was smaller than woodland, which
reduce 1829.30 hm 2 ; the area of unused land reduced 504.15
hm 2 ; In the type whose area decreased, construction is first,
which increased 22,203 hm 2 ; the area of lawn increased
14222.45 hm 2 ; the area of arable land increased 13969.90 hm 2 .
In the reservoir of all types, in the past 30 years, at the
magnitude of changes of area, the change of construction was
the largest, which was 63.00%; unused land was Second, which
was 5.94%; the range of area change of water, grassland,
woodland and farmland were also reached 2.56%, 2.13%,
1.61% and 0.55%.
From the changes of the area of all types in 1972 -1986 and
1986-2000, farmland area has increased prior to the reduction
process, the range of area change were 1.36%, 0.79%;
