In meteorology, transportable software package has been developed
which can handle and integrate data from sounding, surface
measurements and satellite imageries. Forecast model has been
installed in PC environment. Verification of different satellite
surface temperature data was executed. An upwarming trend is
anticipated for the Carpathian basin for the next decades. Its
impact on agriculture (soils and vegetation) have to be analyzed.
In agriculture. developments are underway in order to meet the
requirements of operational satellite remote sensing applications
especially in large area vegetation/land—use mapping, assessing
the type and magnitude of crops, crop development investigation
and yield estimation modelling based on quantitative processing
of multitemporal, multiplatform remotely sensed data.
Technologies for aerial prior warning have been elaborated to
detect, classify and locate shortages, providing information for
decision makers in farm, regional and governmental level.
The broader use of RS data in ame1iorization, land reclamation
and soil mapping is supported by continuous training an by
publishing guidelines and textbooks. In soil moisture analysis
microwave technique has been introduced. For agricultural and
environmental landcover monitoring, investigations on the
spectral signatures of objects and canopy analyses were executed.
In forestry. map revision using remote sensing data in VIS/IR
spectral range are operational; forest canopy studies, compa
rative investigations and spectral analysis using SPOT/Cosmos
data were executed in international framework. Introduction of
digital mapping technology in forest management has been started.
In surveying and mapping the use of remotely sensed data is
operational. Advanced technologies; digital mapping, DTM software
and methods for computer aided orthophoto production from space
imagery have been developed. Technology of topographic map
revision, satellite image map compilation/printing has been
solved using Cosmos and Landsat imagery.
In environmental protection the general issues in Europe are:
— the atmospheric warning,
— the damages in shallow lakes and forests resulted by the
increased acid deposition,
— the impact of antropogen activities.
In this field remote sensing applications in Hungary are as
follow:
— interpretation and inventory of natural resources in regional
level (KomArom County); thematic mapping of environmental
characteristics; registration of changes in industrial
environment; air pollution studies for 5 counties and Budapest ,
— ecological resources analysis, land degradation and water
quality assessments, mapping the danger of environmental acidity,
In water management, guidelines has been published for use in
Balaton—related activities, where satellite based water quality
