Title
Proceedings of the Symposium on Global and Environmental Monitoring

environment has been developed and installed in universities in
order to support education and assessments in visual
interpretations on information content of different aerospace
imageries with special emphasis on features like atmospheric
pollution, man made objects, water and vegetation.
As a unique service in Hungary, the FSMI's browse room facility
provides consultancy and application support, publishes
newsletters, ensures access to technical information, microfiche,
videos, on-line catalogue and publications. Know—how/technology
transfer is based on commercial agreements. According to the
international acceptance and recommendations, F<5MI generates
standard and value-added products using analog, digital and
hybrid techniques:
— 800/1600/6250 bpi digitally S/C data on CCTs/f1oppies,
— preprocessed data products (rad/geom corrected, enhanced,
multitemporal/multiplatform image registration, indices),
— advanced products using DTM, geocoded auxilliary data, GIS and
access to an interactive image analysis workstation.
As a result of earlier promotion activity in remote sensing and
despite of the rapid developments in the civil Earth observing
satellite systems, the topographic maps in 1:10 000 and 1:25 000
scale and the metric aerial photographs are not classified
anymore in Hungary.
Based on ten years of experience, postgraduate courses are
organized by the Chair of Photogrammetry at the Budapest
University of Technology. Moreover, at least five additional
education institutions having graduate and/or postgraduate course
related to remote sensing. In 1989, a Chair of Spatial
Informatics and RS has been established by the University of
Forestry and Timber at Sz^kesfeh^rvcir using the facilities and
expertise of FoMI RSC.
Remote sensing is also lectured for agricultural managers and
will be introduced on the annual international postgraduate
course organized by VITUKI under UNESCO sponsorship since 1966.
Finally, it should be mentioned, several symposia and conferences
with international participation have been organized in the last
five years. The next internationa1 workshop will be devoted to
U RS and GIS technology in Agriculture", probably under the
auspices of FA0 and MoA. A multilingual dictionary on RS has been
recently published by the Hungarian Astronautica1 Society.
Based on this multilingual dictionary, a version in Hungarian
language has been edited and published by FoMI RSC for its
customers and university students.
As conclusion, it can be stated, although there is an increased
demand for timely, cost-effective, comprehensive and reliable
information on the changing environment, and the utilization of
remotely sensed data is slowly gaining more and more recognition,
there are still difficulties in the practical implementation. In
order to meet the requirements, continuous coordinated efforts
and international frameworks are needed taking into account the
national priorities, technical feasibilities and potential
beneficiaries.
