Mapping in the Scale 1:400 for Communal
Purposes

The Community of Huddinge
The community of Huddinge is situated south of Stockholm and bor-
ders on the city. The central parts of the community are about 10 kilo-
metres from Stockholm city. On January 1, 1968, the population of
Huddinge amounted to 50,075 citizens, and during the last four years it
has increased by, on an average, more than 3,000 persons a year. The
community includes about 130 square kilometers of land area, of
which about 30 square kilometres have been planned in detail and built
upon. About 20 square kilometres have been supplied with communal
water and sewage pipes.
To a great extent the community consists of old villa areas and
therefore it is very spread-out. This is illustrated by the fact that at
present about 24,000 of the inhabitants of the community live in small
houses. In the older villa areas the sites are relatively large and a
certain concentration is now in progress by alteration of the town plan-
ning and subdivision of old sites. The supply mains of the community
are being continually extended and at the same time the street network
IS undergoing certain improvement.
The need of large scale maps
In a community of the kind sketched above, the need of large scale
maps is obvious in various connections. To meet the demand for such
maps, in the autumn of 1966 and the winter of 1967 a programme for
large scale mapping of parts of the community was drawn up. The work
on the programme started with an investigation to determine the require-
ments of the community for large scale maps. In the course of this
investigation the following facts appeared.
The community has no uniform collection of large scale maps. As is
