PROCEEDINGS OF COMMISSION VII
INTRODUCTION OF PROFESSOR SMITH BY LCDR COLWELL.
Today we are to hear a series of papers devoted to the subject “Photo In-
terpretation in Engineering.”
The Chairman for this phase of Commission VII happens to be a man
named Smith; the honor of introducing him to this distinguished group falls to
me.
When introducing a person by the name of Smith, care must be taken to
avoid ambiguity as to exactly which Smith is referred to. One distinguishing
feature of today's chairman is that he has more letters in front of his name than
most Smiths; he is known the world over as H. T. U. Smith. A second point of
distinction is that he also has more letters after his name than most Smiths, name-
ly B.S., M.S., Ph.D., reflecting the degrees awarded him at College of Wooster
and at Harvard University.
But the man I am introducing is more than a man of letters. There prob-
ably are few people in this audience who have not become acquainted with his
activities in one field or another. Most of us recognize and admire him as the
author of an outstanding textbook entitled “Aerial Photographs and Their Ap-
plications.” Some know him as a Professor of Geology at the University of
Kansas. Others made his acquaintance during World War II when he rendered
outstanding services to the military as a photogeologist for the U.S. Geological
Survey. Still others know him for his work with the National Research Coun-
cil, the Office of Naval Research or other important organizations with which
he has identified himself.
To extoll further the merits of our chairman would only detract from
the very worthwhile program that he has arranged for today's meeting. There-
fore, without further comment I proudly present your chairman, and the first
speaker for today's panel, Professor H. T. U. Smith.
Acknowledgment by Professor Smith:
Thank you, Commander Colwell, for your very gracious remarks. With
your approval I shall proceed directly to the presentation of papers on photo
interpretation in engineering.
Presentation of papers was then made by H. T. U. Smith, W. H. Simon-
son, M. M. Elias, S. H. Spurr, R. L. Anderson, H. L. Cameron and B. Roelofs.
The full text of each of these papers, in English, and an abstract in French
appear elsewhere in these Archives.
INTRODUCTION OF Mr. BRADSHAW BY LCDR COLWELL.
Today we are to hear a second series of Commission VII papers entitled
*Photo Interpretation in Natural Resource Inventories."
The chairman for this phase of Commission VII is Mr. Kenneth E. Brad-
shaw of the California Forest and Range Experiment Station, U.S. Forest Ser-
