THE COMMITTEE OF FOREST PHOTOGRAMMETRY
A body for photogrammetry research in Swedish forestry
by Lennart Lindskog, Surveyor
Origin
As early as the 1930's attention began to be directed to the great
possibilities for air photography in Swedish forestry. Success was
achieved in many sections, especially in connection with forestry on a
large scale, in trials with material for the practical work of surveying,
planning of various measures etc. Efforts were made by many people
to devise suitable methods for the utilisation of the photographs obtai-
ned. Experience gained has been reported in numerous publications. A
review of the most important of these is to be found in the list of refe-
rences in the manual "Tolkning av flygbilder" (Interpretation of Air
Photographs) issued in 1955 by the Committee of Forest Photogram-
metry.
In forestry circles there was a demand for a wider coordinating body,
which would be capable of coordinating and intensifying the research
work, so that the possibilities represented by the picture material could
be utilised more effectively. Various proposals were considered and it
was found that at least for the present it would be best to have an in-
dependent body. As a result the Committee of Forest Photogrammetry
was established in 1955, with the necessary powers to deal with and
clarify questions associated with the employment of air photographs
for forestry purposes. The Committee is financed by monies from the
Fund for Forestry Research, a Fund established with the object of
supporting experimental and research work in Swedish forestry. The
Committee is to be regarded as a provisional form until the lines of
development as regards organisation can be more cleariy judged.
Present organisation
The Committee has six members, representing different governmen-
tal and private branches of forestry, as also government establishments
with considerable photogrammetrical work. The members are appointed
