Abstract
For an accurate forecasting runoff models were developed to better utilize
and manage the water for hydroelectric power generation and agricultural
land-use. One of the most important parameters in predicting runoff is
the areal extent of the snowcover.
Multispectral satellite imagery (i.e. LANDSAT) provides sufficient details
for an operational monitoring of the snowcover . Several possibilities of
snow mapping techniques from satellite data are used. In addition to the
traditional optical-mechanical method and the improved optical-electronical
method with an interactive analyzer system, automated digital classifi-
cation methods exist. Due to its accuracy and possibilities to reproduce
the results only the latter methods shall be discussed further. The inter-
active system IBIS connected with an IBM-370-155 computer allows the pre-
processing, the statistical evaluation and the processing with different
algorithms of a very big amount of data.
The objective is to determine the acreage of the snowcover within very
short time in order to incorporate the results in a runoff forecasting
model. The image processing methods have to be improved further regar-
ding its cost-benefit relation, to not only achieve a better accuracy
but to reduce expenses as well.
