Full text: Proceedings of the international symposium on remote sensing for observation and inventory of earth resources and the endangered environment (Volume 3)

Introduction, geographical notes and aim of survey.
This survey was carried out under contract to the Lombardy
IRER: the Lombardy Region's Regional Research Institute; the
first stage was concluded in December 1977. The aim of the
research is the ground classification of agricultural land-use
through techniques invc'ving the interpretation of remote-sensing
data from satellites integrated with surveys made from other
platforms for the management of resources in agriculture. Since
the aim of the survey was to acquire wide-ranging know-how and
the most sophisticated specialization in determining land agri
cultural use, several sample areas were chosen to represent the
varied morphological, soil use and agricultural coverage
situations as satisfactorily as possible. It is useful to remem_
ber that in Italy great changes in land can be found close to
one another in the same region.
Sample area no.01: called "Lomellina",see figure (01).
This is an higiy-irrigated plain characterized by the Ticino
river: one of the major rivers in Italy. The average size of
cultivated fields is under 5 hectares; the main crops in the
zone are rice,corn,wheat,forage crops.
Sample area no.02: called "Bassa Bresciana", see figure(02).
This area is characterized by extensive plain near the town of
Brescia. It is intensively farmed and produces corn, wheat, forage
crops. There is an high number of human settlements scattered over
the territory which forms a close network of urbanized land.
Sample area no.03: called "Val di Nizza", see figure(03).
This area is characterized by hills and mountains from 400 to 900
metres above sea level, near the town of Pavia.
