Abstract
A survey system based on large-scale photographs and a radar altimeter was
briefly described at the last IUFRO World Congress in Oslo. Application of the system in
Canada had been successful and the development had reached the technology transfer
stage. Early experiments in tropical environments had limited success.
In the meantime, another experiment in the tropics has been completed. The
main objectives were to test the capabilities of the radar altimeter to provide accurate
profiles of the tree crown surface as well as of the terrain below the crown. Both
profiles are recorded on a strip chart. A secondary objective was to test the accuracy of
species identification on large-scale photographs taken during the profiling runs.
The data collected during the experiment are still being analysed but the
indications are that the radar accurately profiles the ground without interference from
existing vegetation. The tree crown profile seems to be well correlated with stand
height and density. The species identification also appears promising.
Anwendung in
erfolgreich.
