sections as small as an acre were mapped. The digitizing of the areas
was completed in a three-week time frame. The needed information could
not have been provided without the IAS. Ground truth data for these
areas revealed the accuracy of the product was within 1% of what it
should have been.
The IAS has also been used by analysts to conduct statewide inventories
of landfills and surface impoundments. The coordinates and textual
information for these inventories are now stored on tape for retrevial
and future use. Coordinates are geographic while the textual data
contains the site description. Hard copy overlays of each served as
output for the final product.
The IAS has been applied to the study of risk assessment of areas and
populations. EPIC analysts have used the system to apply census data to
study areas and to determine building square footage for work force
estimates. The system has also been used to locate sampling sites and
to provide estimates of tank capacities and numbers of drums on a given
site.
EPIC has found that the analyst can use the system to accurately extract
coordinate data within a second of arc of the actual position, to
measure areas and lengths to within a percent or less of the actual
distance and to provide the user with a quick and usable product.
Even though the full potential of the system has not been realized, EPIC
has met its original design objectives and proven that the IAS is an
accurate, cost-effective tool for the imagery analyst.
